CHOOSING A SIGN

Pixel Pitch & Viewing Distance

One of the most important decisions when purchasing an LED Electronic Message Center (EMC) is determining the appropriate resolution (pixel pitch) and physical size. These are influenced by several factors including how the sign will be used, where it will be placed, distance to the audience and the speed of the audience to name a few. Please speak with your authorized EBSCO dealer partner to better understand which display is suitable for your application.

The recommended minimum and maximum viewing distances of an EMC are based on two characteristics of the display: The pixel pitch and the display’s physical size.

LED EMC Display Recommended Viewing Distances:

Use these calculations to help you select the best size and pixel pitch for your specific location.

Minimum: Pixel Pitch is the distance from the center of one pixel to the center of the adjacent pixel. An EMCs minimum viewing distance is driven by this measurement. If the EMC is viewed at a distance closer than the “Minimum”, messages will still be readable, but will appear pixelated.

10mm Pixel Pitch = 10 Meters (~33 ft)
p>16mm Pixel Pitch = 16 Meters (~52 ft)
p>20mm Pixel Pitch= 20 Meters (~65 ft)
p>26.6mm Pixel Pitch= 26 Meters (~87 ft)

Maximum: The practical maximum distance a sign can be seen from is 10 times the sign’s square footage. Any viewing distance greater than this calculation will decrease the readability of the sign and its ability to attract attention. For example: 4′ x 6′ sign = 24 square feet so 24 x 10 = 240 feet

The Challenge: July 15, 2015, Tomah, Wisconsin – When Fairway Outdoor Advertising was looking to upgrade their static 12’x24′ billboard to an outdoor digital display, they carefully evaluated several competitors. There were a lot of factors they were comparing: image quality, durability, ease of service and use, initial costs and long term costs. They needed a system that would perform reliably and also make sense from a financial standpoint. The product they selected was the 15.8mm ADTI Media SkyPanel display system with distributed power. The solution not only met the quality standards they were evaluating, but also offered a significant cost savings compared to other products they evaluated.

About Fairway: Fairway Outdoor Advertising has approximately 20,000 bulletin and poster displays in 15 states. Digital billboards have been a growing segment for the company. The company has a wide portfolio of prime billboard locations which the company evaluates to determine which locations are best suited for a digital upgrade. There were many great reasons to convert the Tomah, WI location to digital. It’s in a prime location, there currently aren’t any other competing digital billboards nearby, and there is a high demand for advertising in that area.

Choosing ADTI: The final part of their determination was a cost evaluation. ADTI proposed a 15.8 mm display that offers a crisp resolution, while still providing a high level of energy efficiency. One of the unique design features of the system is a fanless display board that cuts energy use by as much as 65%, while reducing maintenance issues by eliminating moving parts and the intake of dust, debris and moisture into the system. ADTI provided a comparison report showing price and energy consumption over a ten year period. The low initial price and the long term energy savings made it a clear winner.

The Result: The system was pre-built into 50″ wide panels that lock together to build large billboard displays. The sections are compact, shipping on a standard flatbed truck. At the project site, prebuilt panels are lifted into place by a crane. The whole process from arrival to a fully mounted display took less than 4 hours to complete.

Operating the system is easy, using the included SkyControl and SkyShow software that lets users control display settings and schedule content. The system is flexible, giving customers the option to use 3rd party media players through an HDMI input. Fairway plans to utilize this feature as they implement Scala media players to control content across multiple locations as their digital portfolio expands.

Needing to overcome the challenges of modernizing their marquee and revitalize the image of their facility, Valley View Casino Center (VVCC) turned to ADTI Media for a signage upgrade.

The Valley View Casino Center facility had a dated look. It’s outdoor sign was an old incandescent lamp system that simply posted text, show times, and simple messages. And, the outdoor image of the 1960’s building undermined reputation of a modern facility as experienced on the inside.

Jim Martindale references a conversation he had with Ernie Hahn of VVCC about his “need to improve the image of the building, but he was constrained with some legacy permitting and legacy design of their marquee, and had challenges figuring out how he could actually bring it up to modern technology. Tearing down the sign would be an arduous, lengthy and costly process, involving many layers of architectural and city planning review. So, he preferred to work within the constraints of what was there.

Sidestepping those challenges with our revolutionary SkyPanel LED display, we retrofitted the existing structure into a new LED display, with minimal structural changes. SkyPanel’s unique lightweight frame made this possible. You can take the existing structure and retrofit it to a new LED display, with minimal changes to the existing structure… It is more of a digital overlay kind of a design, Martindale explains.
